Autumn

nature’s mature season
time to prepare for
earth’s quiet
replenishment

a palette of gold
russet-plum-sepia
leaves back lit
by ebbing sun
interspersed by
dark green pine
some leaves cling
fast to branches
others fall free
from summer’s
exhaustion

sturdy mums entertain
with color-showy
structure until
frost claims them
perennials wither
seed pods burst
tall stems bend with age
spent blossoms
ravaged

sky-one moment
ominous dark
wind whirling
filling air with leaves
next moment
sky breathless blue
bright clear as if
washed clean from
dusty atmosphere

time to shuffle
through mounds of
leaves
face raised to sun
thoughts withdrawn
from the NOW
