As intricate as a fairy tale riddle, the work of Elizabeth Gurrier depicts a modern-day medieval landscape populated with angels, gnomes and elvish faces as well as more ordinary personages.

As gothic as the main portal of the Chartres, her work is done in white on unbleached muslin with polyester batting to bring out the protruding noses and toes.

Somewhere in every piece there is at least one impish, spectacled or mustached or squinted-eyed face — a Gurrier trademark — nestled in the quilting or the stained-glasslike panels. The quilting is also a Gurrier signature.
